It was just another routine day at work for Will. He was finishing up a presentation for a client when Sue walked over to his desk. He noticed the way her skirt hugged her lean figure. Or, he thought, “Pencil thin” as Jane would call it.
“Hey, Will. Done for the day?”, she asked, leaning over his desk far more than necessary.
“Just about”, he replied, shutting down his computer, and stuffing a notebook into his backpack. “What’s up?”
“Well”, she started, while twirling a pencil in her hand, “I thought we could head out and catch a drink.”
“Oh, sorry, I have to go meet Jane.” Will saw the disappointment on her face, “But I’ll see you later. I’ll give you a call.”
“Um, Ok,” she said uncertainly. “Bye.”
“See you.” And with that he was out the door. The coffee place where he was meeting Jane was very close to his office, so he decided to walk there.
‘I can’t believe I agreed to meet her later. There’s something about that girl, I just can’t seem to pull myself away from her.’ Will thought to himself, his pace quickening. ‘Must make sure not to let Jane know. She doesn’t approve. She’ll give me that condescending, ‘holier-than-thou’, look if she found out. And she’d be disappointed and abruptly put up an emotional wall. And then I’d feel guilty and not even enjoy meeting Sue.’
‘Maybe I shouldn’t obsess so much over what Jane thinks. I mean, there’s something about Sue that I really like, I wouldn’t be meeting her or else, would I? And are the reasons for which Jane disapproves of her really valid? What were those reasons, again? Something about her indulging in drugs and ‘being easy’ as Jane put it. That’s not really a bad thing, some would say.’ he thought with a sly grin across his face.
He was almost at the coffee shop now. The heady aroma of freshly pressed coffee greeted him as he approached the cafe. He opened the door and turned around to find Jane sitting at their usual table. There was a warm and welcoming glow about her face. He noticed her curly hair wasn’t at its full volume yet, ‘She’s just washed it’ he thought. He noticed her light green t-shirt and ‘artist pants’. It was nice to see her wearing something other than her favourite Doors t-shirt. She looked so, ‘So much like home’, he thought. ‘Why doesn’t she dress like this more often?’
His trail of thought stopped there, he suddenly noticed that she was looking at him funny, with a dazed look across her face, she was staring into his eyes.
“Um, Jane, hello. Earth to Jane, you there?”
